When God Calls the Reluctant

Youth ministry was never part of the plan. The very thought of relating to and ministering to young people seemed foreign and intimidating. Yet when God placed a burden for leading the Youth Fellowship, it became impossible to ignore His calling. Without strategy, curriculum, or experience, there was only one certainty: if God was calling, He would also equip.

The first Sunday gathering was marked by honest vulnerability. The youth were told plainly, "I don't know what we're going to do, but let's ask God to guide us." That simple prayer of dependence would soon be answered in remarkable ways. Within that very week, a conversation with Rev. Samuel Abraham revealed that the Rooted in Faith course was beginning that Thursday—exactly when guidance was most needed.

God had prepared precisely what was required, at the exact moment it was needed.

Week 1: Growing in Faith & Walking in Responsibility

The foundation was established with a powerful truth from Scripture:

"Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, 'I have no pleasure in them.'" — Ecclesiastes 12:1 (NKJV)

Through interactive icebreakers focused on life choices and small group discussions about developing faith habits, the youth began to understand that spiritual growth requires personal responsibility. The "Seed Challenge" provided a tangible visualization of this principle—each young person took responsibility to nurture actual seeds, tracking their progress throughout the week. The engagement was remarkable. Some returned the following Sunday with growing seedlings, demonstrating their commitment to the spiritual lesson through physical action.

Week 2: You Are Created in God's Image

The foundational truth of human identity emerged from Genesis:

"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." — Genesis 1:27 (NKJV)

The "Identity Mirror" activity became transformational as youth confronted the lies they had believed about themselves and replaced them with biblical truth. This exercise required vulnerability and courage, yet many openly acknowledged the false labels they had carried—labels like "not smart enough," "too quiet," or "not talented." They began speaking God's truth over themselves daily, declaring their worth as image-bearers of the Most High God.

Week 3: You Are Loved & Valued by God

God's personal love for each individual was proclaimed through Jeremiah's powerful words:

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." — Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV)

Communication-focused icebreakers prepared hearts for the main activity: writing a "Love Letter from God." This deeply personal exercise, combined with the "Heart Tracker" activity, created space for emotional connection with God's love. The youth became more open in group discussions, sharing struggles and victories with newfound freedom. The atmosphere shifted from reserved participation to genuine vulnerability and mutual encouragement.

Week 4: Your Gender Does Not Limit You

Paul's revolutionary declaration challenged cultural limitations:

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." — Galatians 3:28 (NKJV)

Bible character quiz games highlighted both male and female leaders whom God used powerfully throughout Scripture. Discussions about the pressures of gender roles in contemporary culture revealed deep-seated limitations many had accepted. The young women especially found affirmation in their God-given purpose, while young men discovered that true masculinity includes sensitivity and service. Youth began owning their identity in Christ rather than conforming to cultural stereotypes about what boys and girls "should" do or become.

Week 5: Obedience to Parents & Authority

This session addressed one of the most practical and challenging areas of youth life, guided by two key passages:

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: 'that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.'" — Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV)

Yet Scripture also provides balance when human authority conflicts with divine commands:

"But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: 'We ought to obey God rather than men.'" — Acts 5:29 (NKJV)

Addressing Complex Family Realities (சிக்கலான குடும்ப நிலைமைகளை எதிர்கொள்ளுதல்)

This session intentionally focused on the diverse family structures represented in the youth group—blended families, adoptive parents, and complicated family dynamics. Many youth live with step-parents, adoptive guardians, or extended family members, which significantly impacts their understanding of obedience and authority.

The central truth emphasized was profound: regardless of our family type or structure, our parents are not our choice—they are a gift and placement from God. This perspective transforms obligation into opportunity, resentment into gratitude, and rebellion into purposeful submission.

The Holy Spirit's presence was unmistakable during this session. Hearts were tender, conversations were honest, and healing began in areas of family pain and confusion. Youth who had struggled with anger toward absent parents or conflicts with step-parents found comfort and clarity in God's sovereign design for their lives.

The Fruit: A Palm Sunday Transformation

Palm Sunday became the culmination and demonstration of five weeks of faithful obedience, intentional learning, and supernatural transformation. The Rooted in Faith course provided by Shepherd's Academy had transformed what was once a source of fear into a space where God's Word took deep root in young hearts.

"To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified." — Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV)

The transformation was evident and undeniable. Before the training, youth ministry felt like an impossible task fraught with uncertainty and inadequacy. The structured curriculum provided vision, practical tools, and biblical conviction necessary to lead young people with clear purpose and direction.

Reflection: God's Perfect Timing (சிந்தனை: கடவுளின் சரியான நேரம்)

These five weeks brought transformation not only to the youth but to their leader as well. The reluctant volunteer became a confident minister, the uncertain guide became a purposeful teacher, and the fearful shepherd became a trusted mentor. When God calls, He indeed equips—but often through means we never expected, at times we never anticipated, with resources we never knew existed.

The youth who participated in this journey discovered their identity, embraced their calling, and learned to navigate the complex relationships and responsibilities of their generation. They learned to honor their families while maintaining their integrity, to embrace their God-given gifts regardless of cultural limitations, and to take spiritual responsibility for their own growth and maturity.

Application Questions for Reflection:

  1. What calling has God placed on your heart that you've been avoiding out of fear or inadequacy?
  2. How can you better support and encourage the youth in your church community?
  3. In what ways do you need to remember your Creator in your current season of life?
  4. What false labels or limitations do you need to replace with biblical truth?
